Norsat LinkControl is Now Available in 12 Additional Languages

Vancouver, Canada – June 12th, 2008 –Norsat International Inc. (“Norsat”) (TSX: NII and OTC BB: NSATF), a leading provider of intelligent satellite solutions, today announced the release of its advanced satellite acquisition and terminal control software, LinkControl™ in 12 new languages. Norsat LinkControl is now available in a total of 15 different languages: Arabic, Bahasa, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish.

“A key component of our strategy is continuing to extend our geographic reach,” Dr. Amiee Chan, President and CEO, Norsat International. “By offering LinkControl in a wide selection of languages, we believe are well positioned to capitalize on the increasing demand for mobile satellite communications worldwide. Our LinkControl software is user-friendly and facilitates a seamless workflow, enabling us to deliver an unparalleled unified user experience.”

Norsat LinkControl software allows users to operate all aspects of a portable VSAT terminal from a single console. Encoder, modem and transmitter functions are all managed from within a single application, eliminating the need for separate control software for each of the antenna control unit, modem, encoder, solid state power amplifiers and traveling wave tube amplifiers. In addition, through LinkControl’s sophisticated satellite acquisition controller, users can orient a three axis antenna subsystem (elevation, azimuth, polarization) towards a desired satellite, in even the most adverse and challenging conditions. LinkControl relies on a combination of inputs to help ensure that the user can acquire the satellite each time an attempt is made.

A standard offering on each Norsat satellite terminal, LinkControl™ is also compatible with modems from Radyne, iDirect and Paradise and transmitters from Xicom. Norsat plans to expand to support other modems and transmitters.

Additional information about Norsat LinkControl and other Norsat product and service offerings can be found at booth 6K1-4 at CommunicAsia in Singapore from June 17th until June 20th and at booth Q195C at Eurosatory in Paris in from June 16th until June 20th.

  • Operating expenses were $1.6 million, compared to $1.4 million in Q1 2007.
  • Net earnings were $0.01 million or $0.00 per share, compared to net earnings of $0.5 million, or $0.01 per share in Q1 2007
  • Improved working capital from $4.9 million in December 2007 to $6.4 million in Q1 2008
  • Paid off the final outstanding tranche of the company’s $0.5 million line of credit
  • Cash and cash equivalents of $1.4 million, compared to $0.7 million at 2007 year end

  • Opened regional office in Fortaleza, Brazil

“During the quarter we continued to make progress on our strategy of developing new products and expanding our geographic reach,” said Dr. Amiee Chan, president and CEO, Norsat International Inc. “With the opening of our Korea office, we have established a concrete footprint in a major centre for innovation and development. Through this investment, we are well-placed to capitalize on new technologies being developed in the Asia-Pacific region. In addition, our NATO Basic Ordering Agreement is a strategic platform that will greatly expand our presence in the global military sector, and we hope to sell additional OmniLink and GLOBETrekker products through this procurement vehicle.”

Dr Chan continued “While Q1 was a challenging quarter from a financial results perspective, we expect sales to regain momentum in the latter half of the year. Demand for our products remains strong. With our solid customer relationships and the technology leadership of our portable satellite terminals, we are well positioned to win additional sizable orders from the U.S. military. Longer term, we will continue working to grow our suite of technology and associated services, extend our global reach and expand into new market verticals.”

Financial Review
Revenue was $2.9 million for Q1 2008, down from $3.8 million in Q1 2007. The year-over-year decline was primarily a result of lower satellite system sales during the quarter, as Norsat exhausted its U.S. military Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity procurement vehicle, and the military did not issue the expected follow-on contract within Q1. Revenue from the company’s Satellite Systems segment was $1.0 million, down from $1.5 million in Q1 2007, and revenue from the Microwave Products segment was in line with the company’s expectations for the quarter at $2.0 million, slightly down from $2.3 million in Q1 2007.

Norsat’s overall gross margin for Q1 2008 was 51%, compared to 53% in Q1 2007. Gross margin for Norsat’s Microwave Products segment was 43% in Q1 2008, compared to 46% in 2007, and gross margin for the company’s Satellite Systems segment increased to 67% in Q1 2008 from 63% in 2007.

Operating expenses for Q1 2008 increased to $1.6 million from $1.4 million in Q1 2007. The year-over-year increase was driven primarily by the company’s planned investment in personnel and resources to support growth and accelerate its product development timeline. Most notably, selling general and administrative expenses increased to $1.3 million from $1.1 million in 2007, reflecting additional expenses associated with the company opening its Korean research and development center in January 2008. Overall, Norsat remains committed to controlling costs, and over the long-term expects to maintain operating expenses below 50% of revenue.

For Q1 2008, net earnings were $0.01 million, or $0.00 per share, compared to net earnings of

$0.5 million or $0.01per share in Q1 2007.

Cash used by operating activities was $0.2 million, compared to $0.5 million the previous year. During the quarter, Norsat paid off its $0.5 million line of credit and recorded $1.4 million in proceeds from the exercise of three million warrants at an exercise price of $0.48. As at March 31, 2008, Norsat had cash of $1.4 million, compared to $0.7 million as at December 31, 2007. In Q1 2008, Norsat’s working capital improved to $6.4 million from $4.8 million as at December 31, 2007.

At quarter end, the total shares issued and outstanding were 53,605,705.

Norsat Introduces High Stability Wideband LNBs & BDCs at NAB 2008

Las Vegas, Nevada – April 15th, 2008 – Norsat International Inc. (“Norsat”) (TSX: NII and OTC BB: NSATF), a leading provider of intelligent satellite solutions, announced product additions to its line of phase lock loop (PLL) low noise block down-converters (LNB) and external reference block down-converters (BDC) at the NAB 2008 tradeshow, the world’s largest electronic media show.

The new line of wideband Ku-Band PLL LNBs, dubbed the 1000 HE series, operates in an extended input frequency range of 10.95 GHz to 12.75 GHz. The 1000 HE Series removes the need to change out PLL LNBs as users move from region to region – a key benefit for satellite newsgathering, maritime and on-the-move applications.

The new external reference BDC line is available in both Ku-Band (1000X Series) and C-band (3000X Series). It offers the high stability necessary for low data-rate applications such as telemetry and remote management.

The products are on display at booth C4644 in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center from April 14-17th, 2008. Additional product information is available at www.norsat.com.

The NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) show covers the development, delivery and management of professional video and audio content across all mediums. Complete details are available at www.nabshow.com.

  • Gross margin was 52%, compared to 41% in 2006
  • Operating expenses decreased to $6.8 million, or 39% of revenue, compared to $10 million, or 65% of revenue, in 2006.

  • Expanded suite of offerings with the launch of seven new products
  • Received U.S. patent for GLOBETrekker design and a European patent for company’s frequency selective surface waveguide filter design
  • Established a representative sales office in Monte-Carlo, Monaco

Q4 2007 Financial Summary

  • Q4 revenue was $4.7 million, compared to $5.4 million in Q4 2006
  • Revenue from the Satellite Systems segment was $2.6 million, compared to $3.1 million in Q4 2006
  • Revenue from the Microwave Products segment was $2.1 million compared to $2.3 million in Q4 2006

  • Q4 net earnings were $0.2 million or $0.005 per share, compared to net earnings of $0.5 million, or $0.01 per share in Q4 2006

“Fiscal 2007 was a turnaround year for Norsat,” said Dr. Amiee Chan, president and CEO, Norsat International Inc. “As a result of our success in driving organic revenue growth while simultaneously reducing our cost base, we reversed what had been a pattern of losses. With a solid operating platform now in place, in 2008 we plan to heighten our focus on driving growth. We plan to continue to add to our suite of technology and associated services, extend our geographic reach and expand into new market verticals. To accelerate growth through these initiatives, we will also explore strategic acquisition opportunities.”

Financial Review
Revenue grew by $2.3 million or 15% to $17.6 million in 2007, predominantly as a result of the company’s increased penetration of the portable satellite systems market. Revenue from the company’s Satellite Systems segment grew to $7.8 million, from $6.3 million in 2006, and revenue from the Microwave Products segment increased to $9.8 million, compared to revenue of $9.0 million in 2006.

As Norsat generates the majority of its revenue in the U.S., the company estimates that Q4 2007 revenue was negatively affected by $0.5 million as a result of U.S. currency fluctuations relative to the Canadian dollar. In addition, Q4 tends to be Norsat’s seasonally strongest quarter. The U.S. military year end is September 30, and this can lead to Norsat receiving orders in the final days of Q3, which are not reflected until subsequent quarters. However, as a result of Norsat becoming more entrenched as a supplier, orders for both Microwave Products and Satellite Systems were booked more evenly throughout 2007. The combination of these two factors resulted in a 13% year-over-year decline in Q4 revenue.

Norsat’s overall gross margin for 2007 improved to 52% from 41% in 2006. The increase primarily reflects the expansion of our turnkey services business. Gross margin for 2007 for Norsat’s Satellite Systems segment grew to 58% from 38% the previous year, and gross margin for the company’s Microwave Products segment was 48% compared to 43% in 2006.

Operating expenses for 2007 decreased to $6.8 million, or 39% of revenue, from $10.0 million, or 65% of revenue in 2006. The year-over-year reduction reflects the positive results of Norsat management’s cost restructuring initiatives in the areas of inventory, rent and headcount, which commenced in the fourth quarter of 2006.

For 2007, net earnings were $1.5 million, or $0.03 per share, compared to a net loss of $4.4 million or ($0.09) per share in 2006.

Operating activities generated $0.5 million of cash in 2007, compared to ($3.8) million the previous year. Norsat ended the year with cash and equivalents of $0.7 million, compared to $1.8 million as at December 31, 2006. The $1.1 million decrease was primarily a result of Norsat making a payment toward its $2.0 million in debt obligations during the first half of 2007. As at December 31, 2007, Norsat’s working capital improved to $4.8 million from $2.3 million as at December 31, 2006.

A full set of financial statements and MD&A for Norsat is available at www.norsat.com and will be available at www.sedar.com.

“Being awarded this BOA opens the door to a large range of potential customers for Norsat, as we now have formal access to new market opportunities for which we could not have previously been a contender,” said Dr. Amiee Chan, president and CEO Norsat International Inc. “Although there is no immediate dollar value tied to this type of agreement, establishing such contract vehicles makes it easier for customers to order products from Norsat.”

A BOA is a procurement vehicle whereby the contract is negotiated in advance and placed centrally with a supplier. The BOA outlines the clauses that will be applicable to the future procurement of a specified range of goods and services. In the case of NC3A BOAs, all basic contract provisions are agreed upon, including prices or a definitive pricing methodology, after which NATO, NATO Member Nations and other eligible purchasers can place individual orders against the central contract. NC3A negotiates all BOAs on behalf of NATO in accordance with NATO guidelines and procedures.
