Located in London, DSEI attracts over 34,000 people including Defense Ministers, International Military and Armed Forces, key industry players, and private sector companies. Norsat participated at DSEI under the Canadian Pavilion in hall N4. It was four days of action-packed seminars, new technology, and unique exhibits. DSEI is a large and significant show representing the entire supply chain for defense and security.
Norsat’s VP of Sales and Marketing, Brian Donnelly, and Business Development EMEA Manager, Olivier Scorsipa, worked the show floor and had discussions with defense prime contractors and end users alike including BAE, L3, Babcock, the Belgium Navy, and NATO. It was great to exhibit at a European show and to highlight Norsat products to the European market. On display at Norsat’s booth (#N4-114) was the GLOBETrekker satellite terminal, ATOM series BUCs and SSPAs, and Norsat’s popular LNB products. Visitors showed great interest in all products and were excited to see such powerful and compact products.
On the satellite terminal side, visitors expressed much interest in the OTM solutions and naval maritime terminals that Norsat offers, especially the WGS compliant (soon to be fully certified) 1.5m COM15X. Norsat’s MarineLink COM series are high performance antennas provided in Ka, Ku, and C bandwidths and are ideal for naval applications. The COM systems offer the highest reception gain available on the market and are user-friendly. Naval forces were very interested in the COM series terminals as they were easily customizable and could provide a solution for strategic and complex naval projects.
On the microwave/satellite components side, the DO-160 certified ATOM BUCS were a big hit as attendees were looking for solutions for airborne SATCOM applications. The ATOM series of BUCs/SSPAs offer low SWaP and are up to 85% smaller than equivalent BUCs. The ATOM series is an excellent choice for OTM applications such as airborne, maritime vessels, unmanned ISR, ground vehicles, and manned aircraft. ATOM customers came by the Norsat booth and provided lots of positive feedback for the ATOM BUCs and SSPAs. They rated the product as high quality and durable.
Overall, DSEI was a fantastic show! Lots of highly regarded people attended the show and the technology on display was amazing. It was great to have Norsat represented in the world’s largest defense and security event and we hope to attend DSEI again in 2019!

2017 is a significant year for Norsat as it marks the 40th anniversary of Norsat as a successful business! On Thursday August 10, Norsat celebrated this major milestone with a beautiful afternoon boat cruise around downtown Vancouver. The head office staff in Vancouver were all invited to an afternoon of food and drinks on the two-level Magic Moments yacht charter. As the Norsat team set sail from the False Creek waters into the Burrard Inlet, everyone was all smiles and ready to celebrate in style. The staff were able to relax, enjoy themselves on the boat, eat amazing appetizers, and drink refreshing beverages. It was a team bonding event that would not be forgotten. The yacht sailed along Stanley Park which offered amazing views of the Lion’s Gate bridge where some people even spotted sea lions in the water! The yacht stopped along Coal Harbour so that everyone could snap pictures in front of Canada Place – a view which is even more beautiful from the water. The staff saw views of North Vancouver and West Vancouver before heading back to False Creek. A special 40th anniversary cake was ordered for this event and a champagne toast was made. It was truly a magical celebration which made everyone excited for the years to come. Thank you to the excellent boat staff and everyone who came out to the celebration! It was an afternoon to thank those who have helped Norsat get to where it is today. Happy 40th Anniversary Norsat!

A key law enforcement agency presented a requirement for a high-performance, ruggedized duplexer to operate in a challenging on and off road environment within very compact space constraints.Click here to read the case study.
CASE STUDY: Radiometrics Partners with Sinclair Technologies to Design Custom Antenna
Radiometrics (through its recently acquired DeTect Meteorological Systems Group) was selected to replace the aging troposphere/stratosphere Radar Wind Profiler (RWP) system at NASA Kennedy Space Center. At the time, NASA was utilizing weather balloons to determine winds aloft, and loosely relying on their old RWP system as a backup. NASA heavy-lift community’s interest in precise, current winds spurred the need for the new RWP system. This replacement project is expected to last for the next 20 years. Click here to read the case study.
CASE STUDY: Sinclair Helps NAV Canada Safely Move Millions of Aircraft
NAV CANADA’s radar coverage of Hudson Bay was limited to line-of-sight (LOS) and did not cover the entire Hudson Bay area. The Company used VHF communication sites around Hudson Bay and HF communications for areas that were not covered by VHF. During a testing phase, the system produced a result that was less than expected as the coverage was effected by ice buildup on the antenna. Sinclair Technologies was approached to provide a high gain antenna that would be able to withstand ice buildup and to provide the needed coverage. Click here to read the case study.

Antenna Installation and Clamps
Antennas are sensitive pieces of equipment and can be easily damaged if installed incorrectly. If the antenna is not installed correctly, the antenna can shift position which can result in poor performance, excessive vibration, and material fatigue. The antenna should be straight and mounted in a sturdy fashion; it should have minimal movement and should stay as still as possible. The source of a reduced coverage area could be a result of several factors, but it is important to first look at how the antenna was installed and the clamps used. Click here to read the blog post.

Norsat’s article, “BUC and SSPA SWaP Considerations for Communications on the Move”, was featured in the June 2017 issue of Microwave Product Digest. Written by Norsat’s Product Manager, Daniel Lopez, this article explores design considerations in both mechanical and RF architecture in Block Upconverters (BUCs) and Solid State Power Amplifiers (SSPAs). The article discusses questions such as:
- Why is Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) so crticial in Communications on the Move (COTM) systems?
- How does a successful design minimize the form factor, reduce weight, and achieve high power output?
- What design elements impact what is considered a good versus poor SWaP balance in BUCs and SSPAs?
- In actual COTM applications, how do these principles work out in real life?
