Lights, cameras, action! The NAB Show is one of the biggest shows in Las Vegas bringing in over 103,000 people from 166 countries to the Las Vegas Convention Center. Its focus on media, entertainment, and technology is a sensation for all five senses and is redesigning the way people experience media. The NAB show breaks traditional broadcasting conventions and embraces new ways to deliver content. With a broad variety of products on display ranging from cameras, softwares, cloud apps, and drones, there was always excitement in the air. It was especially great to see Facebook, Google, and Amazon getting into the mix too. Norsat International was proud to be a part of this innovative event showcasing our newest microwave technology, the 4- and 5-band LNBs.
Brian, Annette, Laura, and Marcos represented Norsat’s sales and marketing team at the NAB show and they were definitely kept on their toes. They were visiting partner booths, engaging with new and existing customers, meeting media partners, and promoting the new ATOM 50W Ka BUC and LNBs that were recently launched last month. It was amazing to see all the support from our partners as they displayed and integrated Norsat’s products within their demos and booths. Thank you to Viking Satcom who displayed our C-band LNBs, DH Satellite who used Norsat LNBs on their antenna display, and to Superior Satellite who featured our LNBs on their 4.5m antenna and multi-channel feed (see photo gallery below). We met with a lot of partners at NAB and we hope to continue growing our relationship with them.
Visitors came from all over the world ranging from the USA, Europe, Asia and Latin America. It was particularly nice to meet in the middle and see broadcasting and media delivery industry professionals from Latin America. Laura, our sales representative for that region, collected many qualified leads and is looking forward to working on some potential new projects in Latin America. As well, with the recent change to the AMC-8 satellite, many radio stations are looking to upgrade their microwave products. It was apparent that there was a demand for C-band, Ku-band, and Ka-band products. Specifically, customers raved about Norsat’s C-band 3000 series LNBs and boasted that they were durable, high quality, and lasted for years. The C-band 3000 series LNBs were very popular at this show and within the broadcast market.
The showstopper of the event occurred on the third day of the show during NASA’s session, “Reaching for the Stars: Connecting to the Future with NASA and Hollywood”, where the first-ever live 4K video stream from space transpired. The live video involved NASA astronaut and International Space Station (ISS) commander Dr. Peggy Whitson and NASA astronaut Jack Fischer who conversed with Amazon Web Services Elemental CEO and Co-founder Sam Blackman. The three discussed the importance of videos in facilitating NASA missions and then the astronauts demonstrated experiments in a zero-gravity environment. It was a first for the world to see a live 4K video from space and provided an eye-opener for how fast technology is developing. We’re excited to see what happens at next year’s show!
There was never a dull moment at NAB. With Cirque du Soleil performers making an appearance in real at the entrance gate, as well as providing a Virtual Reality experience, the NAB show is where you come for the newest and coolest toys. NAB was a great opportunity to get updated with the latest technology in broadcast and to touch base with many of our partners who exhibited at the show. The NAB show was the epitome of high technology in the broadcast market and Norsat was thrilled to be a part of it all!

Sinclair is officially on the trade show circuit! Last week we were in Las Vegas at the IWCE show and this week Sinclair exhibited at the TESSCO One show in Nashville, Tennessee. The two day show was put on by TESSCO personnel and included an exhibition floor, knowledge sessions, and keynote speakers. Thousands of wireless industry professionals gathered together for this event as it was a great opportunity to network and to learn about the latest developments in wireless technology. The show was very busy for our US Director of Sales and Marketing, Sal Farina, as he was constantly meeting direct customers and resellers. It was especially great to meet customers from Repeated Signal Solutions – we’re looking forward to working with you! As well, thanks to Damon from TESSCO who was always bringing new customers by Sinclair’s booth. Overall, it was a successful show and we hope to participate again in 2018 in Charleston, NC.

It was all smiles at the Satellite 2017 show in Washington, D.C. The three-day exhibition included over 350 companies from all over the world and is one of the most critical shows in the satellite industry. Norsat International is a Satellite trade show veteran as they have been attending the show for over seven years. This year was especially exciting as Norsat launched new Ka-band BUC and LNB solutions on the opening day. Both new and existing customers stopped by Norsat’s booth to check out the ATOM 50W Ka-band BUC and the 4- and 5- band LNBs, an industry-first. The news spread quickly and soon a steady stream of intrigued show goers came by the Norsat booth.
New Ka-Band Product Solutions on Display
The ATOM 50W Ka-band BUC is the latest addition to the ATOM portfolio ideal for military SATCOM as well as commercial applications. It is available in either single or dual-band configurations and provides up to 50W of saturated power (over 25W @ Plin). Covering transmit frequencies in both Military and Commercial bands (30.0-31.0 GHz and 29.0-30.0GHz, respectively) the ATOM 50W BUC can be configured to suit operation on any Ka -band satellite.
The ATOM 50W BUC is up to 20% smaller, 50% lighter, and 50% more energy efficient than alternatives. It is ideal for a wide range of applications including TWTA replacement, Satellite News Gathering, transportable VSAT, SATCOM on the Move, and Radar. The ATOM 50W also includes ATOMControl, the same Management and Control software that powers the full ATOM Ku and Ka family of products.
The 9000I4-4 and 9000I5-4 series of LNBs extends Norsat’s single, dual, and triple band LNB offering and represents an exciting new part of the Ka product solution. Available both in internal and external reference model families, these two new product series will cover bands from 17.2 GHz to 22.2 GHz. Gain flatness is +/-2.5 dB, noise figure of 3.0 dB max, and input and output VSWR maximums of 1.5:1 and 2.2:1 respectively – all packaged in a lightweight and space-efficient form of 11.2 cubic inches of volume and weighing 550g. An upgraded multi-band LNB controller, which will drive both families of LNBs using 22KHz tone and output volume completes the system to provide a comprehensive multi-band LNB solution.
Rugged and Reliable: Norsat’s Satellite Terminals
In addition to the new microwave products, we featured two of our most popular satellite terminals, the GLOBETrekker and Journey Manpack. Customers from Hughes, Toshiba, and foreign military dropped by the booth to learn about what Norsat had to offer. Military show goers commented how they liked that the GLOBETrekker satellite terminals were raised off the ground which kept components dry and that it has the ability to integrate multiple modem types which can support future/evolving network needs. Available in auto-acquire and assisted acquire, Norsat’s satellite terminals are a fan-favourite, especially in military applications. The photo on the right shows Norsat Business Development Manager, Aaron Titus, demonstrating LinkControl, an intuitive, flexible, and powerful software unique to Norsat’s satellite terminals to potential clients.
A Shoutout to our Partners at Satellite 2017
Norsat’s microwave products were seen throughout the show and not only at Norsat’s booth. Below are some images of our microwave products in action. Thanks to Viking Satcom, OrbitCS, TVCComm, and General Dynamics SATCOM for featuring Norsat ‘s microwave products with their satellite terminals!
The Future of Satellites: Industry Discussions
More than 14,000 satellite communication professionals attended the conference and exhibition making it one of the largest shows in the satellite industry. It was great to see that the conference was filled with insightful discussions and that the trade show floor was packed with ground-breaking technology. There were plenty of talks around recent developments with Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) services and the future of collaboration and differentiating services. 11 new Ku- and Ka-band Non-Geosynchronous Orbit (NGSO) systems have been filed at the FCC so it will be interesting to see what direction satellite companies will make with these recent developments.
But All Good Things Must Come to an End
Overall, the Satellite 2017 show was an absolute success! The Norsat sales team connected with some familiar faces and some new faces. Our sales team enjoyed educating show goers about what Norsat had to offer in the communications industry. It was a fun and exciting show and we hope to see you again at next year’s Satellite show!

When it comes time to yearly giving for the Norsat Foundation, the company reaches out to its employees on what they care about. By involving employees in the decision process, the company encourages individual giving and strengthens the loyalty and respect of current employees. Here are just a few of the worthy charities that our employees chose in 2016: YWCA Vancouver, Richmond Food Bank and the Canadian Lutheran World Relief.
YWCA Metro Vancouver has worked tirelessly to achieve women’s equality.Today the YWCA is one of Metro Vancouver’s largest and most diversified non-profit organizations. Our holistic, integrated programs and services help lift women and families out of poverty, provide the best start for children and create new opportunities for education, employment and leadership.
Richmond Food Bank
The holidays are always extra busy for the Lower Mainland food banks. During December, Norsat employees collected food, money and toys to help put smiles on children’s faces and to make the Christmas season a bit brighter for some families. As well, the Norsat Foundation supported the Richmond Food Bank with a $2,000 donation.
Canadian Lutheran World Relief
Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) is one of Canada’s most experienced relief and development agencies. Formed in 1946 as a response to the humanitarian crisis in post-war Europe, CLWR has grown to serve the world’s poor and disenfranchised through community development, refugee resettlement in Canada, emergency relief, and humanitarian aid shipments (We Care program). Norsat’s donation will go toward the Canadian Lutheran World Gifts from the Heart program. The CLWR Gifts from the Heart range anywhere from clean drinking water, to learning and living kits, garden tools or medical treatment for a sick child. Gifts from the Heart provide tangible and meaningful gifts that are saving and changing lives.
Sinclair Support Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation
Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation is the largest foundation supporting childhood disability in Canada. The Foundation was established in 1996 to inspire community interest and raise funds in support of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. The personal cost of raising a child with a disability is estimated at $40,000 year, almost four times the amount it costs to raise a child without a disability. For many families the expenses are much higher.
At the same time as expenses mount, many families face reduced income as a result of one parent leaving work to look after their child. Holland Bloorview’s Family Support program helps families in this situation to cover the costs of caring for a child with a disability. Sinclair’s generous donation of $5,000 to the Family Support fund will help pay for quality of life programs that support their child’s therapy goals, improve fitness levels and overall wellbeing, and for transportation and essential equipment such as commodes, walkers and wheelchairs, that enable their children to go home from hospital.
This donation also qualified for Holland Bloorview’s IMPACT Challenge Campaign, in which three generous donors have agreed to match up to $2.3 million in donations.
Holiday Season Made Brighter for Aurora Families
The Newmarket Food Pantry relies solely on the generous donations from the community – through food drives, fundraisers, and other events, as well as through food and cash donations. During the holiday season, Sinclair employees generously donated to the Newmarket Food Pantry. The company also supported the Food Pantry with a $2,000 donation.
Did you know there are between 500 and 1,000 16-24 year olds living on the Vancouver streets each night? The majority of street youth have experienced physical, sexual and or emotional abuse, often at the hands of the adults that were responsible for taking care of them. Likewise, Vancouver’s downtown streets can be dangerous. Sexual exploitation, drug abuse, poverty and illness are commonplace on the streets and many of our youth are re-victimized there, having fled one unsafe situation only to find their circumstances often worse. Covenant House helps homeless, runaway and at-risk young people for short-term residential care through their Crisis Program and longer term care in their transitional living program Rights of Passage (ROP).
Although Norsat has been a long-time supporter of the Covenant House, many of the employees were unaware of the history and the great work that Covenant House does in our community. Jessica Thompson, Development Officer at Covenant House came to Norsat to talk about their outreach team, drop-in centre, shelter beds, and mental health and housing programs.
During this visit, Norsat’s marketing and communications manager and chair of the Norsat Foundation, Annette Colligan, presented Jessica with a donation to support their various programs.

On August 14 & 15th, Norsat participated in the annual STS Global Golf and Learn Event in Long Island, NY. This program provided an excellent opportunity for Norsat to further build our relationship with STS Global, as well as network and discuss the future of the satellite industry and trends in the market with some of the industries finest.
The second day learn portion of the program focused on high throughput satellites with presentations by many of attendees including topics such as:
- HTS – The next big thing?
- Broadband Connectivity – it’s all about throughput
- HTS Technology and Satellite Backhaul for 4G LTE
- Cybersecurity for Broadcast – are you prepared?
- Ka-Band / HTS Network: Where complexity meets technology
We look forward to more partnering opportunities with STS Global!
