At Norsat, we care about our customers and strive to continuously improve our products and services to better meet your needs.  We hope that every time you visit our website, speak to a sales representative or call technical support your experience is a good one, and if it isn’t, we’d like to know how to do better.

Introducing Bob Petrovic, Microwave Product Manager

petrovic_bobWe are delighted to introduce the newest member of the Norsat team: please welcome Bob Petrovic!  Bob has extensive product management experience throughout the telecommunications sector, and his expertise will be a welcome addition to the microwave sales team.  We asked a few questions of our new Product Manager to get to know him a little better:

What was your first job?

As a 15 year old in 1981, I was hired to be a Commodore “Vic Kid”.  Selling computers to consumers was considered too difficult for adults so Commodore hired teenagers to work in the electronics section of department stores like Eatons.  It was great exposure to selling new technologies into new markets.

What are you most proud of in your career so far?

Generally, I’ve always enjoyed launching new technologies that help people do their jobs better and live fuller lives.  Specifically, introducing 2G, 3G and then 4G mobile data services, and growing the user base by over 1000% in 5 years was a great adventure.  These services now enable the smartphones and tablets we depend so much, and it was a pleasure to be involved in the development process.

What are you most looking forward to working on at Norsat?

I am thrilled and honored to be joining Norsat.  I’m looking forward to working with a passionate group of people to expand the product portfolio and develop innovative solutions for our clients and partners.  I can already see that Norsat has a strength in product quality, so I’m in a great position to build on this strength with new product development.

In which direction do you anticipate growth or product development for the microwave unit?

Our success depends on Norsat continuing to be a dependable provider of high quality microwave equipment.  I know it will be important to expand product offerings to meet new challenges and opportunities, optimize processes to ensure on-time delivery, and enhance support capabilities.  As consumers increasingly demand constant connectivity, we will need to develop products that can enable communications at all times in all places, whether this means remote regions, extreme climates, or simply during airplane flights. 

What do you think of the state of the communications industry and its future?

There are more cellphones on earth than refrigerators – we live in a hyper-connected world that will only continue demand increased connectivity.  While we have created extensive wireless networks in urban areas, the next great challenge will be to extend connectivity to every nook and cranny of this blue marble we call home. It’s a communications challenge Norsat is well placed to meet, and I look forward to working towards this aim.

What would you eat for your last meal on earth?

Either dim sum or pizza – depends if the last meal is lunch or dinner.

What are you reading right now?

Like many people in planning functions, I’m fascinated by history.  I’m finishing “Holy Warriors : A Modern History of the Crusades” and just started “Napoleon : Life, Legacy, and Image”.

You need to go on holiday tomorrow- where would you go?

I love the outdoors and since tomorrow is still ski season I would enjoy the wilds of Banff and Lake Louise.   There is no faster recharge for me than time with nature.

We won a BC Export Award!

Wishing you and yours a happy and healthy holiday season, and best wishes for 2013

2012 has been a wonderful year for Norsat as we’ve introduced some Welcome Director of Operations, Frank So, launched new products and seen our hard work rewarded with awards and other success.  As we look forward to a new year, we want to take a moment to thank all of our loyal customers and partners for your continued support: we wouldn’t be here without you.  

We will be closed for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years day, but will otherwise operate regular business hours throughout the holidays. Our sales and customer service teams will continue to be available to provide technical assistance and support, so don’t hesitate to contact us during the holiday season.

Norsat Operator Training

Norsat offers a variety of customized training sessions to ensure our customers are completely comfortable setting up, operating and maintaining their satellite terminals and accessories.  Recently we hosted a 7 day DVIDS Technical Maintenance Course in our Vancouver office for a group from the US Marine Corps.  The course provided attendees with the skills and knowledge needed to troubleshoot, perform repairs and properly maintain their DVIDS transmitter systems. As usual, we included a combination of classroom training and hands on experience to ensure trainees left with both technical know-how and practical skills to operate their equipment with success.

The DVIDS team members were excellent students, asking great questions and keeping us on our toes.  They left the training session equipped with new skills and expertise and we wish them all the best as they deploy and use their equipment.

Welcome Director of Operations, Frank So

Norsat recently added a new member to the team: we are delighted to introduce our new Director of Operations, Frank So.  Frank’s education in Engineering and his extensive experience in operations management make him a great fit for Norsat’s busy Operations and Customer service teams and we look forward to his contributions.  To get to know him a little better, we asked him a few questions and welcomed him with a rather unusual Norsat ritual.

What was your first job?
I had a paper route when I was in elementary school.  That was when it was still OK for kids to ride around on their bikes after school and deliver newspaper door-to-door.  After that, I had a job at McDonald’s making big bucks at $3.00/hr.  McDonald’s had a great system in place and the company really evolved with the times and the market.  I learned a lot working for them.

What are you most proud of in your career so far?
One of the bigger accomplishments happened when I was working for Moli Energy in Maple Ridge.  The company had a long history as a R&D center that was losing money through manufacturing.  During the years that I was Operations Manager, I was able to work with the team to turn the business around; part of it was due to good timing in the market and there was a shortage of supply.  The end result was that the company made over $10M CDN over the last 1-1/2 years prior to the recession in late 2008.

What are you most looking forward to working on at Norsat?
I see a lot of opportunities for positive change and I look forward to working with the group to make some strides forward.  Operations has great hard-working team and I’m eager to get the chance to work more closely with them.

How do you think Customer Service fits into the Operations umbrella?
Customer service serves as a gauge to tell us how well our product/service is performing out in the field.  The group can provide great feedback towards continuous improvement.  I know that Norsat is known for it’s great customer service, so I look forward to working with this strength.

What do you think of the state of the communications industry and its future?
I’m far from being an expert in this area, however, like any other industry, customers want things quicker, better and cheaper.  To get out of this circle of somewhat conflicting goals, we need to stay innovative to bring new products and ideas into the market.

Norsat is implementing Lean production practices.   How does this fit into your Operations management philosophy?
I strongly believe in a systematic approach towards management.  With a proper system in place, standardizing processes should become second nature to the entire team with higher efficiency being the end result.  Once a working system is in place, we can work on continuous improvement.  I’m very happy to see the management team at Norsat has full buy-in to the Lean culture.

What are you reading right now?
Recently I just read all three books of the Hunger Game Trilogy – the books are always better than the movies.  I’ll read anything that captures my attention but I’ve had pretty good luck with Oprah’s Picks.

You need to go on holiday tomorrow- where would you go?
I’ll pick some place featured in the National Geographic.

Last week Frank received a traditional Norsat welcome in the form of a surprise Nerf Gun attack.  We’re pleased to report that he survived the attack, and we’re looking forward to his operational expertise.  Welcome!

Who are your major customers?

We operate in a wide variety of industries including broadcast, emergency communications, and all vertical markets that require satellite communications and fiber applications. Our products include traditional satellite communications, as well as large and small terminals.  Our major customers include Provincial TV Stations, CCTV, Broadcast system integrators, Satellite operators, Beijing TV, telecoms system integrators, and satellite network operators.

What are the challenges of working in these markets and how do you overcome them? 

We find that there’s a lot of tough competition from local manufacturers and so competing on price alone can be difficult.  However, our long term reputation for providing responsive sales assistance and after-sale support enables us to offer high quality, high performance products, which are especially appealing to our customers working in mission critical environments.  We provide extra services many of our competitors don’t, including scheduling of deliveries, import documentation assistance, product delivery, and system installation and testing, so we provide a much more complete solution than many of our competitors.  Additionally, we have a 20 year track record of success in China, so customers know they can depend on us to provide reliable products along with a high level of support. 

What are the benefits of working in these markets?

Working in developing markets is exciting because growth potential is phenomenal, and we’re certainly experiencing better than average market growth right now.

Which Norsat products do you carry? 

We carry a range of Norsat satellite terminals, the most popular of which, is the GLOBETrekker™.  We’ve found that customers really like the GLOBETrekker™ because of its ultra-portability, flexible configuration, and rugged design. The fact that the terminal can be shipped in IATA compliant packaging is really important to many of our customers, and is often a key selling feature.

 

 

What are your strategic sales goals for the future?

We hope to continue to assist Norsat in developing successful future products, increasing sales coverage, and gaining share in more vertical markets.  It’s been very helpful to have a Norsat sales director for the Asia-Pacific region (Dan Dia-Tsi-Tay) to support our efforts in China and Mongolia.
