Norsat hosted two representatives from NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) to review the DART+ (Dual-band Auto-acquire Rapid-deployable) satellite terminal upgrades that Norsat completed for NATO. Norsat worked exclusively with NATO to design and develop the innovative DART+ product which has been deployed in active combat areas since January 2012, and is now an integral part of NCIA’s field communications program.
The DART+ terminals are used to provide data, voice and telecommunications within the theater of operation, and enable field personnel to establish communications anywhere regardless of infrastructure availability or environmental conditions.
This site visit focused on ensuring that the previous DART terminals were upgraded to meet the new features and functionality of the new DART+ satellites and were completed to NATO’s satisfaction. These on-site Factory Acceptance Tests ensure that the system is functioning properly before the remainder of the DART terminals undergo the upgrades. Key test areas that NATO reviewed were the ability to track inclined orbit satellites and fiber optic connectivity. Testing also included itemizing components, verifying the quality of work, and temperature cycling. Our guests didn’t have to endure the Vancouver rain, but did have to stand outside in close to zero degree weather while Norsat’s experienced production technicians ran through the extensive testing.
We are happy to report that after three days of rigorous testing that Norsat has received official Acceptance from NATO.
The Branham300 list recognizes the top public and private Canadian companies working in Information & Communication Technology, as ranked by revenues.
Norsat has made measurable progress in advancing its leadership position within the industry with our innovative communications technology solutions and is excited for the opportunities to grow our business into 2015 and beyond.
The 2015 Edition of the Branham300 marks the 22nd year of the listing—and another year in which Canada’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector set a revenue record.
The ICT sector in Canada continues to impress. For the fifth consecutive year, the Top 250 recorded growth and set record revenues, and 2014 was no exception with an increase in revenues of 6.8% to $90.9 billion.
That is a remarkable total, especially considering that revenues at companies such as BlackBerry, the former king of Canada’s ICT sector, dropped 38% to $7.7 billion in fiscal 2014.
The Branham Group is a leading consultancy, exclusively focused on the technology sector. They deliver intelligence and knowledge as focused analysis, breakthrough advice and thought leadership.

There was some cool and exciting new technology launched at the National Association of Broadcasters 2015 show last week in Las Vegas and nothing could have been cooler than Norsat’s high performance 5000 Series PLL LNBs! (ok maybe those drones with video cameras might have been the coolest, but we were a close second I am sure!)
Norsat launched our new 5000 Series LNBs which are ideally suited for high-end broadcast applications including DBV (digital broadcast video), VSAT broadband, military satcom, point-of-sale, and oil and gas. The 5000 Series was well received by customers and prospects, especially from Latin America, as it fills a gap in the L.O. stability between Norsat’s 3000 and 8000 product lines and comes at a very attractive price point. At the show we also were showcasing our ATOM Series of BUCs and SSPAs and our Ranger microsat terminal, which garnered a fair amount of attention as well.
Our team had fantastic meetings with our partners SatCom Resources, IK Tech, and ThinKom, and Norsat’s microwave products were on display or integrated into satellite terminals at several of our partners’ booths. Thanks to TVG-SEG, Viking Satellite, Superior Satellite Engineers, DH Antennas, for your continued support!
The majority of inquiries we received were for Ku-Band, but there were also a few questions about availability of products for S-band. As well, despite the “rumblings” in various parts of the world about reappropriating C-Band frequency for terrestrial applications, we are still seeing a huge demand and long-term deployment interest from customers in the broadcast arena.
Overall traffic for the show was excellent and kept our sales team busy. Even though our feet are still tired and the Vegas exhaustion is just subsiding, we are already counting the days until the NAB 2016 show, April 16th 2016. See you on the show floor next year!

The Norsat ATOM series of Ku-band SSPAs and BUCs ranging in power from 25W to 250W, are smaller and lighter than any product currently on the market, and are particularly useful for COTM/SOTM platforms with size, weight, and power constraints. The ATOM products are airborne qualified and have been implemented in Line-of-sight (LOS) and Beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) communications payloads in Group 3 or larger UAVs,” stated Dr. Amiee Chan, President and Chief Executive Officer, Norsat International Inc.
The Norsat Worldwide Sales Team was in Vancouver last week for our annual Sales and Marketing Conference. The three-day session included presentations from the Norsat executive, engineering, product marketing and marketing communications. Each of the satellite and microwave sales members outlined their territory and sales plans for the year as well.
Team members from our engineering and customer support conducted hands-on training including a demo of the 1.8M SigmaLink transportable satellite terminal and the LinkControl Software features such as the acquisition and control interfaces, pre-configurable user profiles and auto-detection capabilities for easy modem or bandwidth switching.
A good portion of the conference was dedicated to discussion around product roadmap and market/customer requirements, and how Norsat can continue to innovate in order to meet our customer needs.
For a break from the technical presentations, the sales and marketing department participated in the Marshmallow Challenge, a fun team building and instructional design exercise which encourages teams to work collaboratively, and think innovatively and creatively.
Congratulations to Sheri Morita, Microwave Product Manager and Stan Mullery, Norsat UK Sales on completing the challenge with their rendition of the Eiffel tower.
Conducting yearly sales training allows the sales and marketing teams to understand the strategic direction of the company and come together on a yearly basis to discuss sales strategies in order to help the business move to the next level and achieve our desired results.
Televisa- 2014 World Cup -click here for the full case study.
Televisa is the largest multimedia corporation in Latin America. It is a major international entertainment business offering content such as TV shows, sports and newscasts across Latin America. The Televisa team has recently been busy with the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.Their satellite team has travelled from Mexico to Brazil with their satellite truck, covering the Mexican team and it’s opponent’s matches. Oscar Herrera Ramirez is the Chief of Broadband and Satellite Network Operations at Televisa. He is responsible for the maintenance of the terminals, remote links with satellite and daily operations of the Televisa satellite team.
When they are not streaming a FIFA game, the satellite team is broadcasting reports, player interviews, location- specific news and more. During the football matches, they install antennas in areas where there are large gatherings of viewers, such as main plazas or city squares. Oscar explains to us how Norsat terminals enable the Televisa team to capture the public reaction the moment it happens. Norsat terminals stream the content to the International Broadcast Center in Rio, which is then broadcast to the world. Thousands of fans may be lucky enough to enjoy the football in person, but it’s estimated that over 3.2 billion of us will catch the live TV coverage, and Norsat and Televisa have a hand in making that happen.
Norsat Newslink terminals
Norsat and Televisa
Televisa’s satellite operations unit uses Norsat LNBs as well as Norsat Newslink terminals. The LNBs being used for the World Cup are used on 4.5, 3.7, 1.5 and 1.0 meter C and Ku Band antennas (pictured to the right). Norsat Newslink terminals have given the satellite team at Televisa the ability to provide rapid response to the needs of various Televisa productions. Oscar also explains that the quality of Norsat products has allowed them to be used by Televisa for a long period of time with little need for repair or upkeep. Oscar says that the primary reasons for purchasing Norsat equipment was cost, quality and technical support.
When asked about the experience of working with Norsat products, Oscar replied that Norsat products give them a great deal of confidence in their job function. Norsat is pleased to provide Televisa with a dedicated technical support representative should the need arise. Oscar also commented that the design of Norsat terminals gives them the flexibility to adapt to different types of RF equipment and make upgrades to keep up with new technologies.

We recently caught up with one of our military customers and he explained to us how Norsat’s technology has provided vital communication links for the US Army. SSG Allen is a former Staff Sergeant for the Mobile Public Affairs Detachment. He worked with Norsat Newslink terminals to deliver content to military families and the public through news affiliates using DVIDS (Defense Video & Imagery Distribution System).
SSG Allen was based at a Multi-National Division in Northern Iraq. That particular division used a Norsat Newslink terminal to provide real-time communication with the US and to broadcast interviews from high-ranking officials about military activities, concerns and special events in-theater.The Mobile Public Affairs’ Norsat Newslink terminal also enabled their detachment to “tell the soldier’s story”, enabling them to give b-roll and packages to news affiliates.
SSG Allen commented that these lines of communication were key in increasing morale in the Soldiers and their families by allowing the transmission of “shout outs”. Through these broadcast messages, Soldiers were given the chance to regularly send love to their families.
At Norsat, we take pride in being a leading provider of innovative communication solutions that enable the transmission of data, audio and video for remote and challenging applications. This is just one example of how our technology helps provide communications around the globe in a variety of unique situations.
Norsat’s ATOMControl software features an easy to use user Interface that gives you the ability to monitor and control Norsat’s ATOM Series of BUCs & SSPAs. This video will serve as a guide for the download, installation and basic troubleshooting of the software.
