Dynamic Innovation and Cutting-edge Technologies Featured at NAB 2016 Thu, 19 May 2016 17:04:22 +0000 Continue reading ]]> nab2016

With over 1870 exhibitors and 103,000+ attendees, the 2016 National Association of Broadcast (NAB) show, the world’s largest electronic media event covering the creation, management and delivery of content across all platforms, did not disappoint. The show was filled with energy and excitement with all of the new technologies sweeping the broadcast industry including those technologies for the delivery of broadcast content.

The biggest talk of NAB 2016 was the future of virtual reality filmmaking. The first major announcement came as YouTube introduced live streaming in 360-degrees. Drones and their future in filmmaking was also a big buzz at the show.

New to the NAB show this year, the Satellite Industry Forum held a one-day conference that focused on the role that the satellite industry plays in broadcasting and the delivery of high quality video content from virtually anywhere to anywhere on the planet whether it is on land, sea or in the air.

Coming off the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) official start of the broadcast spectrum auction, where they will be repacking many hundreds – if not more than a thousand – broadcasters to new frequencies in the television band, we are still unclear as to how this will truly affect satellite newsgathering.

One such panel discussion examined the role that the satellite industry plays in the development and broadcast of Ultra-HD services. Large players such as SES, Eutelsat, Intelsat and AT&T Entertainment Group reviewed the challenges facing the satellite industry in the new age of high definition content delivery.

IMG_3937At NAB, Norsat highlighted its comprehensive and growing line of BUCs and LNBs for the SNG market. With the recent launch of our ATOM 25W KA BUC, and the 250W KU ATOM BUC, Norsat saw huge interest in these products, as well as our 100W ATOM BUC. Ka-band continues to gain momentum with increased interest in our specialty products including the ATOM 25W and 50W, due to best SWaP (Size, Weight, Power) in the industry. SNG customers were very pleased with the SwaP of the new 250W ATOM BUC (equivalent to a 400W TWTA). Our low cost PLLs were also well received as customers move away from traditional DRO to the Norsat 5000 and 5200 series. C-band continues to stay strong with lots of interest, especially from SNG customers and Latin America customers.

Norsat was able to connect with multiple partners, customers and prospects throughout the four day event and feels that NAB continues to be a key show and market area for the company.

Norsat Helps Bring Yankees Games to Your Television Tue, 17 May 2016 21:15:21 +0000 Continue reading ]]> On a recent trip to New York, Norsat’s Manager of Marketing Communications, Annette Colligan, spotted one of Norsat’s Low Noise Block downconverters (LNBs) on an AVL Technologies satellite antenna on top of a New England news truck at Yankee Stadium. The 1000 series LNB receives a signal from a satellite in the sky, converts it to a lower frequency, and then sends the signals to a modem inside the truck, all part of the two way communications between the sporting event and your television.Yankees_Norsat_LNB

For years Norsat has been providing LNBs, amplifiers, and satellite terminals for satellite newsgathering (SNG) applications worldwide. When chatting with the ground team from the news truck, the tech said that they have had the Norsat LNB for over ten years. This is just another testament to the quality of the Norsat product line.

Sinclair Technologies Engages in Quality Conversations at IWCE2016 Wed, 30 Mar 2016 21:01:40 +0000 Continue reading ]]> IWCEThe Sales and Marketing team from Sinclair Technologies, Norsat’s RF division, recently returned from the International Wireless Communications Expo held from March 21 – 25th at the Las Vegas Convention Center. This year’s show saw thousands of industry professionals come together to discuss the latest trends and topics in communications technology. With over 370 exhibitors in attendance, the general feeling was that this year’s event saw probably about 25% more traffic than the 2015 show. Assisting in this uptake was the fact that the 2016 show was co-located with several other events including the Network infrastructure Forum, ETA’s Education Forum, Dynamic Spectrum Sharing Summit, as well as a Motorola partner event.

Hot topics at the 2016 show included FirstNet (First Responder Network Authority). FirstNet is to establish, operate, and maintain an interoperable public safety broadband network in the US. Congress allotted $7 billion and 20 MHz of valuable radio spectrum to build this network. “FirstNet’s request for proposal (RFP) should generate “fierce competition” for the right to build and maintain a nationwide public-safety broadband network,” stated one panelist. Integrated with this discussion were sessions on how to deploy LTE within public safety and the integration of service, device and the network. LMR has been around for a long time, but LTE is fairly new to the industry. Our feeling is that LTE and LMR will co-exist for many years. Other areas of discussion included: various mission critical applications for public safety and the network interoperability among public safety agencies.

And there was no lack of energy or excitement at the Sinclair booth! Showcasing our new look for 2016, the booth was abuzz with customers, distributors and new prospects.

In our centerpiece product tower, Sinclair was showcasing some of our newest technologies including the SC251D 2.3dBd dual collinear omni antenna featuring low passive intermod performance with 35dB minimum isolation guaranteed. Fabricated using durable components, this series of antennas is designed and fabricated for ease of installation and to meet the most stringent wind and ice loading requirements. Due to its wide band, high average power and PIP (Peak Instantaneous Power) power handling capability, this antenna is ideally suited for VHF trunking applications or multi-channel operations. The reliability and durability of this antenna makes it suitable for mission critical applications such as public safety and law enforcement.

20160323_094022_resizedBoth at the our booth and IWCE’s Product Showcase, Sinclair highlighted the SM700, broadband multifunctional transport antenna which is specifically designed to address the need for a compact, low profile, broadband antenna that is truly universal. When used with a cross-band coupler, a single antenna can serve multiple discrete RF systems operating in the 694-6000MHz range. Designed to withstand harsh environments and constant vibration without compromising performance, the rugged SM700 series antennas are ideal for vehicular rooftop mounting. The SM700 offers easy installation with just one hole mount and greater protection against water ingression. The SM700 is ideal for public safety and transportation applications and we also engaged in multiple conversations about in-building uses.

The IWCE show provided an excellent opportunity for our team to connect with prospects, customers and partners who we haven’t seen in a while. The overwhelming sentiment from our customers is that they are happy with the quality and reliability of Sinclair products and the knowledge of our sales team – they like doing business with a well-established company. With prospects that stopped by the booth, we saw increased discussions on Sinclair’s systems design and customization capabilities.

Overall, the show was a huge success for the team and we will be busy following up with all of the leads we collected.

Norsat Exhibits at Premier Event for Satellite Communications Fri, 11 Mar 2016 20:31:41 +0000 Continue reading ]]> logo
The 35th anniversary Satellite show held at the Gaylord National Convention Center did not disappoint. With over 350 exhibitors, and +13,000 attendees, the show was a buzz with the latest discussions on the continued strength, importance and relevance of space-based solutions in the worldwide telecommunications infrastructure. Bringing together market leading companies presenting the latest technologies and solutions that are transforming the way we live, work and interact on a global scale.

The Satellite show is an excellent venue for Norsat to connect with some of our key customers and business partners to discuss opportunities and issues facing the satellite communications marketplace, as well as showcase some of our leading products and technology.

At Norsat’s booth, we were highlighting two of our portable satellite terminals. The new Journey Manpack, single case, low weight, backpackable solution saw a ton of interest! Small size and weight continues to be a prime requirement for military and commercial customers. Norsat also featured our GLOBETrekker 2.0 terminal a feature rich, auto-acquire fly-away satellite terminal.image1

Norsat’s ATOM series of BUCs and SSPAs continue to dominate the size, weight and power efficiency wars with customers attesting to the advantages this brings them for their terminals. During the show Norsat announced its latest addition to the ATOM series, the ATOM 250 watt Ku-band BUC and SSPA. Read more here!

On the Move terminals are continuing to gain momentum. Good news for Norsat’s ATOM BUCs that give the size weight and power efficiency COTM needs, but also has the military certifications required for the applications, including EMI/EMC, shock, and vibration.

O3b Networks, named Satellite Operator of the Year in the 2015 Via Satellite Excellence awards, was a key topic of discussion at the show which bodes well for Norsat as we offer both single and dual-band O3b LNBs and BUCs that are certified by O3b.

Overall the show was a success for our team and we look forward to heading back to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center next March for Satellite 2017!

Staff Alignment – Norsat Executive Present to Staff Mon, 07 Mar 2016 22:40:25 +0000 Continue reading ]]> All_Hands

After every quarterly earnings release the Norsat executive take the time to present the quarterly financial and business performance, along with departmental updates to the Norsat staff.

Quarterly All Hands meetings provide an excellent avenue to get all staff on the same page and remind employees of the corporate objectives and strategies because sometimes the big picture is lost in the details of everyone’s daily work day. Messages from leadership are more powerful when delivered in person as opposed to an email. At the All Hands meeting information is easily shared and won’t get lost in employee’s Inbox.

During this meeting the CEO also takes the time to recognize employees for a job well done. Individuals can be nominated by their peers for a R.I.D.E.R award (Responsiveness, Integrity, Dedication, Entrepreneurialism, and Resourcefulness). Management reviews the quarterly submissions and then rewards the selected individuals.SAM_0467

At the end of the All Hands a small social gathering allows employees to mingle and encourages interaction between employees and departments that may not work or see each other very often.

Overall, the Norsat All Hands meeting yields several benefits and is an excellent tool that the executive use to foster stronger communication and transparency throughout the organization.
