Dress for the Cause Event Raises More than $3300

In celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Norsat and Sinclair joined organizations across the nation for the Dress for the Cause fundraiser. Dress for the Cause and the Breast Cancer Society of Canada raise money for the research into the detection, prevention, treatment and cure of breast cancer.  To date, the Dress for a cause event in Canada has successfully raised over $7 million for Canadian breast cancer research.

To collect donations, Norsat hosted a delicious pancake breakfast complete with eggs, sausage, fresh fruit, and juice. Norsat’s CEO graciously offered to match all employee contributions.

Norsat’s Sinclair division in Aurora posted ribbons on their office walls, dressed up in their bra stickers and did a parade through the office and warehouse to gather donations, and promote awareness of this worthy cause.

Norsat’s two divisions, along with the corporate match from the Norsat Foundation raised $3,380.

Norsat Helps Feed Vancouver’s Homeless and Low-Income Families at UGM BBQ

The sun was shining and it was a great day at the Union Gospel Mission Annual Summer BBQ, Saturday, July 15th at Oppenheimer Park in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Norsat was once again proud to be a corporate sponsor of this annual event that fed more than 5,000 meals to the downtown eastside residents who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, as well as low income families.

Attendees feasted on a sizzling summer BBQ including burgers, smokies, coleslaw, macaroni salad, a pop and even a cool treat at the end! Residents could also participate in face painting, bouncy castles and mini-carnival games, providing hours of entertainment and a much-needed moment of rest and relaxation for some who don’t get to celebrate the fun of summer.

Studies show the child poverty rate in the Downtown Eastside is a staggering 64%. Norsat was happy that they could join title sponsor Roger’s Sugar Vancouver to help host the biggest UGM event of the year. Thank you to the Norsat team and the other corporate sponsors that volunteered throughout the day to help prepare and serve meals.

Annette Colligan, Norsat’s Marketing Communications Manager and Chair of the Norsat Foundation, was interviewed by the Vancouver Sun. See the video here.

The NAB Show Roundup!

Posted on Monday, May 8

Lights, cameras, action! The NAB Show is one of the biggest shows in Las Vegas bringing in over 103,000 people from 166 countries to the Las Vegas Convention Center. Its focus on media, entertainment, and technology is a sensation for all five senses and is redesigning the way people experience media. The NAB show breaks traditional broadcasting conventions and embraces new ways to deliver content. With a broad variety of products on display ranging from cameras, softwares, cloud apps, and drones, there was always excitement in the air. It was especially great to see Facebook, Google, and Amazon getting into the mix too. Norsat International was proud to be a part of this innovative event showcasing our newest microwave technology, the 4- and 5-band LNBs.

Brian, Annette, Laura, and Marcos represented Norsat’s sales and marketing team at the NAB show and they were definitely kept on their toes. They were visiting partner booths, engaging with new and existing customers, meeting media partners, and promoting the new ATOM 50W Ka BUC and LNBs that were recently launched last month. It was amazing to see all the support from our partners as they displayed and integrated Norsat’s products within their demos and booths. Thank you to Viking Satcom who displayed our C-band LNBs, DH Satellite who used Norsat LNBs on their antenna display, and to Superior Satellite who featured our LNBs on their 4.5m antenna and multi-channel feed (see photo gallery below). We met with a lot of partners at NAB and we hope to continue growing our relationship with them.

Visitors came from all over the world ranging from the USA, Europe, Asia and Latin America. It was particularly nice to meet in the middle and see broadcasting and media delivery industry professionals from Latin America. Laura, our sales representative for that region, collected many qualified leads and is looking forward to working on some potential new projects in Latin America. As well, with the recent change to the AMC-8 satellite, many radio stations are looking to upgrade their microwave products. It was apparent that there was a demand for C-band, Ku-band, and Ka-band products. Specifically, customers raved about Norsat’s C-band 3000 series LNBs and boasted that they were durable, high quality, and lasted for years. The C-band 3000 series LNBs were very popular at this show and within the broadcast market.

The showstopper of the event occurred on the third day of the show during NASA’s session, “Reaching for the Stars: Connecting to the Future with NASA and Hollywood”, where the first-ever live 4K video stream from space transpired. The live video involved NASA astronaut and International Space Station (ISS) commander Dr. Peggy Whitson and NASA astronaut Jack Fischer who conversed with Amazon Web Services Elemental CEO and Co-founder Sam Blackman. The three discussed the importance of videos in facilitating NASA missions and then the astronauts demonstrated experiments in a zero-gravity environment. It was a first for the world to see a live 4K video from space and provided an eye-opener for how fast technology is developing. We’re excited to see what happens at next year’s show!

There was never a dull moment at NAB. With Cirque du Soleil performers making an appearance in real at the entrance gate, as well as providing a Virtual Reality experience, the NAB show is where you come for the newest and coolest toys. NAB was a great opportunity to get updated with the latest technology in broadcast and to touch base with many of our partners who exhibited at the show. The NAB show was the epitome of high technology in the broadcast market and Norsat was thrilled to be a part of it all!

When it comes time to yearly giving for the Norsat Foundation, the company reaches out to its employees on what they care about. By involving employees in the decision process, the company encourages individual giving and strengthens the loyalty and respect of current employees. Here are just a few of the worthy charities that our employees chose in 2016: YWCA Vancouver, Richmond Food Bank and the Canadian Lutheran World Relief.

YWCA

YWCA Metro Vancouver has worked tirelessly to achieve women’s equality.Today the YWCA is one of Metro Vancouver’s largest and most diversified non-profit organizations. Our holistic, integrated programs and services help lift women and families out of poverty, provide the best start for children and create new opportunities for education, employment and leadership.

Richmond Food Bank

The holidays are always extra busy for the Lower Mainland food banks. During December, Norsat employees collected food, money and toys to help put smiles on children’s faces and to make the Christmas season a bit brighter for some families. As well, the Norsat Foundation supported the Richmond Food Bank with a $2,000 donation.

Canadian Lutheran World Relief

Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) is one of Canada’s most experienced relief and development agencies. Formed in 1946 as a response to the humanitarian crisis in post-war Europe, CLWR has grown to serve the world’s poor and disenfranchised through community development, refugee resettlement in Canada, emergency relief, and humanitarian aid shipments (We Care program). Norsat’s donation will go toward the Canadian Lutheran World Gifts from the Heart program. The CLWR Gifts from the Heart range anywhere from clean drinking water, to learning and living kits, garden tools or medical treatment for a sick child. Gifts from the Heart provide tangible and meaningful gifts that are saving and changing lives.

Jim Reville of Sinclair Technologies Presents at Network Capacity and Densification Panel at IWCE 2017
Sinclair Technologies, an innovator in antenna manufacturing, has been selected to present on the Network Capacity and Densification: HetNets, Backhaul and FirstNet panel at IWCE 2017. We are proud to announce that Jim Reville, a RF engineering professional with over 30 years industry experience, will be representing Sinclair on this panel.

iw17-logo-tagline-black-blue

This session is a part of the Smart Cities and Critical Infrastructure track which will examine the densification of networks for maximum coverage and capacities, both indoors and outdoors. Times and technology have changed the approach of network deployment as there is no longer the need to put up thousands of towers for nationwide coverage. Instead, wireless sites with hetnets, digital antenna systems (DAS), and small cells have become the new norm for today’s communications industry. The number of access sites have increased dramatically as the deployment of these sites are becoming easier and less expensive to build. As a result of the increase in access sites, new problems such as backhaul and C-RAN are becoming more evident. These issues and possible solutions will be discussed with industry experts during the Network Capacity and Densification panel.

jreville1Mr. Jim Reville works with the Public Safety Industry on the design, implementation, and support of Land Mobile Radio systems to resolve RF problems in challenging environments. Jim’s contribution to this panel will be his expertise in antenna design and the criteria needed when choosing the correct antenna for the Public Safety Industry.  During his presentation, he will be covering the importance of PIM, PIP, and overcoming common installation issues.

Jim will be presenting on Tuesday March 28, 2017 at 8:30am in room S224. The panel will run for 2 hours and will feature a total of four panelists.

Network Capacity and Densification: HetNets, Backhaul and FirstNet
Date: Tuesday, March 28, 2017
Time: 8:30AM-11:30AM
Room: S224
Session Number: T215

Sinclair Support Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation
holland_blrvw_logo

Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation is the largest foundation supporting childhood disability in Canada. The Foundation was established in 1996 to inspire community interest and raise funds in support of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.  The personal cost of raising a child with a disability is estimated at $40,000 year, almost four times the amount it costs to raise a child without a disability. For many families the expenses are much higher.

At the same time as expenses mount, many families face reduced income as a result of one parent leaving work to look after their child. Holland Bloorview’s Family Support program helps families in this situation to cover the costs of caring for a child with a disability. Sinclair’s generous donation of $5,000 to the Family Support fund will help pay for quality of life programs that support their child’s therapy goals, improve fitness levels and overall wellbeing, and for transportation and essential equipment such as commodes, walkers and wheelchairs, that enable their children to go home from hospital.

This donation also qualified for Holland Bloorview’s IMPACT Challenge Campaign, in which three generous donors have agreed to match up to $2.3 million in donations.

Holiday Season Made Brighter for Aurora Families
newmarket-food-pantryThe Newmarket Food Pantry relies solely on the generous donations from the community – through food drives, fundraisers, and other events, as well as through food and cash donations. During the holiday season, Sinclair employees generously donated to the Newmarket Food Pantry. The company also supported the Food Pantry with a $2,000 donation.
