Sinclair Showcases at TESSCO Open House

Over 16 vendors attended TESSCO’s Wireless Open House event on Thursday February 16, 2017 in Baltimore, Maryland. Sinclair Technologies‘ Director of Sales & Marketing USA, Sal Farina, was at the event showcasing Sinclair’s top-of-the-line RF antennas and solutions. Norsat Helps Covenant House Provide Hope to Vancouver’s Street Youth

Did you know there are between 500 and 1,000 16-24 year olds living on the Vancouver streets each night?  The majority of street youth have experienced physical, sexual and or emotional abuse, often at the hands of the adults that were responsible for taking care of them. Likewise, Vancouver’s downtown streets can be dangerous. Sexual exploitation, drug abuse, poverty and illness are commonplace on the streets and many of our youth are re-victimized there, having fled one unsafe situation only to find their circumstances often worse. Covenant House helps homeless, runaway and at-risk young people for short-term residential care through their Crisis Program  and longer term care in their transitional living program Rights of Passage (ROP).

Although Norsat has been a long-time supporter of the Covenant House, many of the employees were unaware of the history and the great work that Covenant House does in our community. Jessica Thompson, Development Officer at Covenant House came to Norsat to talk about their outreach team, drop-in centre, shelter beds, and mental health and housing programs. covenant_house_2016_cheque-presentation

Norsat Partners with STS at their Annual Golf & Learn Event

On August 14 & 15th, Norsat participated in the annual STS Global Golf and Learn Event in Long Island, NY. This program provided an excellent opportunity for Norsat to further build our relationship with STS Global, as well as network and discuss the future of the satellite industry and trends in the market with some of the industries finest.

The second day learn portion of the program focused on high throughput satellites with presentations by many of attendees including topics such as:

Norsat Helps Bring Yankees Games to Your Television

On a recent trip to New York, Norsat’s Manager of Marketing Communications, Annette Colligan, spotted one of Norsat’s Low Noise Block downconverters (LNBs) on an AVL Technologies satellite antenna on top of a New England news truck at Yankee Stadium. The 1000 series LNB receives a signal from a satellite in the sky, converts it to a lower frequency, and then sends the signals to a modem inside the truck, all part of the two way communications between the sporting event and your television.Yankees_Norsat_LNB

For years Norsat has been providing LNBs, amplifiers, and satellite terminals for satellite newsgathering (SNG) applications worldwide. When chatting with the ground team from the news truck, the tech said that they have had the Norsat LNB for over ten years.  This is just another testament to the quality of the Norsat product line.

Media event to Announce Contribution from SADI

Norsat has been working with the Strategic Aerospace and Defence Initiative (SADI) since 2008, when we receive a repayable contribution towards our Research and Development program. Through this funding we were able to develop over 20 products for the microwave and satellite markets, including the new GLOBETrekker 2.0.

This past week we announced a new contribution from SADI, which will be used to further our R&D work, develop new collaborative relationships with university researchers, and strengthen our ties with the local businesses who supply us with components that go into our technology.  

We were pleased to host the Honourable Kerry-Lynne Findlay, Associate Minister of National Defence, and MP for Richmond, Delta East last Friday as she made the announcement at a media event.  This event, hosted jointly with Industry Canada, was well attended by Norsat’s partners, Industry Canada representatives and various media.  The Minister spoke to the strength of the SADI program and Canada’s manufacturing industry, and was positive about what Norsat has achieved through SADI funding thus far.

From all of us at Norsat, we thank Minister Findlay for joining us, and the government of Canada for investing in our technology.  We look forward to making you proud!

MED-IT is is a professional exhibition on Information Technology, which takes place  in Algeria’s lovely Palace of Culture, with more than 5,000 trade visitors and 150 exhibitors.  Norsat’s EMEA Sales Director, Hamed Henni attended the event, where he worked with partner Noyau Telecom and demonstrated Norsat’s ROVERTM ultra-portable satellite terminal.

Who are your major customers?

We operate in a wide variety of industries including broadcast, emergency communications, and all vertical markets that require satellite communications and fiber applications. Our products include traditional satellite communications, as well as large and small terminals.  Our major customers include Provincial TV Stations, CCTV, Broadcast system integrators, Satellite operators, Beijing TV, telecoms system integrators, and satellite network operators.

What are the challenges of working in these markets and how do you overcome them? 

We find that there’s a lot of tough competition from local manufacturers and so competing on price alone can be difficult.  However, our long term reputation for providing responsive sales assistance and after-sale support enables us to offer high quality, high performance products, which are especially appealing to our customers working in mission critical environments.  We provide extra services many of our competitors don’t, including scheduling of deliveries, import documentation assistance, product delivery, and system installation and testing, so we provide a much more complete solution than many of our competitors.  Additionally, we have a 20 year track record of success in China, so customers know they can depend on us to provide reliable products along with a high level of support. 

What are the benefits of working in these markets?

Working in developing markets is exciting because growth potential is phenomenal, and we’re certainly experiencing better than average market growth right now.

Which Norsat products do you carry? 

We carry a range of Norsat satellite terminals, the most popular of which, is the GLOBETrekker™.  We’ve found that customers really like the GLOBETrekker™ because of its ultra-portability, flexible configuration, and rugged design. The fact that the terminal can be shipped in IATA compliant packaging is really important to many of our customers, and is often a key selling feature.



What are your strategic sales goals for the future?

Case Study: Finnish Defence Forces

Norsat has been working with the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) since 2009, when we provided a satellite communication link for the Army during a European Union peace-keeping mission in Chad.  Since then we’ve expanded the network to include Navy and Air Force and improved the quality of the network, providing a more reliable service, and reducing operating costs.  This case study documents the results of our work with FDF, and provides a template for other organizations looking for cost effective, remote network communication solutions.  For the full case study, please click here.

Product Focus: Satellite Locator App for iPhone

We take customer feedback seriously at Norsat, and so when some of our customers mentioned difficulties with pointing their satellite terminals, we decided to find a solution:  Meet the new Norsat Satellite Locator App, available for Free on the App Store.  This App will assist users in locating satellites of interest, assessing obstructions and pointing satellite terminals, all from a simple iPhone interface.  For more information on using the app, and its technical specifications, please click here.

ROVER Assembly Demo Video

We like to talk about how easy it is to assemble our satellite terminals, but now we finally have some proof!   We decided to ask someone with no technical expertise to assemble a ROVER ultra-portable satellite terminal and then we documented the results.  In this demonstration, we showed our very own marketer how to assemble a ROVER once, gave her a user manual and then asked her to assemble it on camera.  You can take a look at a video of the results here.

BC Business Magazine: Top 10 Growing Companies 2012.  BC Business magazine does a yearly ranking of the province’s biggest and best public corporations, and Norsat ranked in the Top 10 fast growing companies in BC, in addition to a Top 100 ranking in biggest public corporations.

Branham300: Top 250 Canadian ICT Companies.  The Branham300 list recognizes the best Canadian companies working in Information & Communication Technology, and this year we moved up this list to position 102 from last year’s rank of 139.

Business without Borders: This online magazine focusses on Canadian companies operating in export markets, and they recently included a great Norsat profile, describing our success in diversifying into new markets.

CanTech Letter : Cantech focuses on Canadian Tech Stocks, and following our strong Q2 financial results, they wrote this article predicting a great future for Norsat, including the potential for the company stock price to quadruple.
