CASE STUDY: Custom Duplexer Designed for Law Enforcement Off Road Vehicle Fleet
Access to reliable communication equipment is essential for law enforcement agencies where a short response time is critical in what could be a life or death scenario. Sinclair Technologies understands that reliability is always a major consideration in the design process for public safety products. A key law enforcement agency presented a requirement for a high-performance, ruggedized duplexer to operate in a challenging on and off road environment within very compact space constraints.Click here to read the case study.
CASE STUDY: Radiometrics Partners with Sinclair Technologies to Design Custom Antenna
Radiometrics (through its recently acquired DeTect Meteorological Systems Group) was selected to replace the aging troposphere/stratosphere Radar Wind Profiler (RWP) system at NASA Kennedy Space Center. At the time, NASA was utilizing weather balloons to determine winds aloft, and loosely relying on their old RWP system as a backup. NASA heavy-lift community’s interest in precise, current winds spurred the need for the new RWP system. This replacement project is expected to last for the next 20 years. Click here to read the case study.
CASE STUDY: Sinclair Helps NAV Canada Safely Move Millions of Aircraft
NAV CANADA’s radar coverage of Hudson Bay was limited to line-of-sight (LOS) and did not cover the entire Hudson Bay area. The Company used VHF communication sites around Hudson Bay and HF communications for areas that were not covered by VHF. During a testing phase, the system produced a result that was less than expected as the coverage was effected by ice buildup on the antenna. Sinclair Technologies was approached to provide a high gain antenna that would be able to withstand ice buildup and to provide the needed coverage. Click here to read the case study.

Antenna Installation and Clamps
Antennas are sensitive pieces of equipment and can be easily damaged if installed incorrectly. If the antenna is not installed correctly, the antenna can shift position which can result in poor performance, excessive vibration, and material fatigue. The antenna should be straight and mounted in a sturdy fashion; it should have minimal movement and should stay as still as possible. The source of a reduced coverage area could be a result of several factors, but it is important to first look at how the antenna was installed and the clamps used. Click here to read the blog post.

Lights, cameras, action! The NAB Show is one of the biggest shows in Las Vegas bringing in over 103,000 people from 166 countries to the Las Vegas Convention Center. Its focus on media, entertainment, and technology is a sensation for all five senses and is redesigning the way people experience media. The NAB show breaks traditional broadcasting conventions and embraces new ways to deliver content. With a broad variety of products on display ranging from cameras, softwares, cloud apps, and drones, there was always excitement in the air. It was especially great to see Facebook, Google, and Amazon getting into the mix too. Norsat International was proud to be a part of this innovative event showcasing our newest microwave technology, the 4- and 5-band LNBs.
Brian, Annette, Laura, and Marcos represented Norsat’s sales and marketing team at the NAB show and they were definitely kept on their toes. They were visiting partner booths, engaging with new and existing customers, meeting media partners, and promoting the new ATOM 50W Ka BUC and LNBs that were recently launched last month. It was amazing to see all the support from our partners as they displayed and integrated Norsat’s products within their demos and booths. Thank you to Viking Satcom who displayed our C-band LNBs, DH Satellite who used Norsat LNBs on their antenna display, and to Superior Satellite who featured our LNBs on their 4.5m antenna and multi-channel feed (see photo gallery below). We met with a lot of partners at NAB and we hope to continue growing our relationship with them.
Visitors came from all over the world ranging from the USA, Europe, Asia and Latin America. It was particularly nice to meet in the middle and see broadcasting and media delivery industry professionals from Latin America. Laura, our sales representative for that region, collected many qualified leads and is looking forward to working on some potential new projects in Latin America. As well, with the recent change to the AMC-8 satellite, many radio stations are looking to upgrade their microwave products. It was apparent that there was a demand for C-band, Ku-band, and Ka-band products. Specifically, customers raved about Norsat’s C-band 3000 series LNBs and boasted that they were durable, high quality, and lasted for years. The C-band 3000 series LNBs were very popular at this show and within the broadcast market.
The showstopper of the event occurred on the third day of the show during NASA’s session, “Reaching for the Stars: Connecting to the Future with NASA and Hollywood”, where the first-ever live 4K video stream from space transpired. The live video involved NASA astronaut and International Space Station (ISS) commander Dr. Peggy Whitson and NASA astronaut Jack Fischer who conversed with Amazon Web Services Elemental CEO and Co-founder Sam Blackman. The three discussed the importance of videos in facilitating NASA missions and then the astronauts demonstrated experiments in a zero-gravity environment. It was a first for the world to see a live 4K video from space and provided an eye-opener for how fast technology is developing. We’re excited to see what happens at next year’s show!
There was never a dull moment at NAB. With Cirque du Soleil performers making an appearance in real at the entrance gate, as well as providing a Virtual Reality experience, the NAB show is where you come for the newest and coolest toys. NAB was a great opportunity to get updated with the latest technology in broadcast and to touch base with many of our partners who exhibited at the show. The NAB show was the epitome of high technology in the broadcast market and Norsat was thrilled to be a part of it all!

Available both in internal and external reference model families, these two new product series will cover bands from 17.2 GHz to 22.2 GHz. Gain flatness is +/-2.5 dB, noise figure of 3.0 dB max, and input and output VSWR maximums of 1.5:1 and 2.2:1 respectively – all packaged in a lightweight and space-efficient form of 11.2 cubic inches of volume and weighing 550g. An upgraded multi-band LNB controller, which will drive both families of LNBs using 22KHz tone and output volume completes the system to provide a comprehensive multi-band LNB solution.
Rugged and Reliable: Norsat’s Satellite Terminals
In addition to the new microwave products, we featured two of our most popular satellite terminals, the GLOBETrekker and Journey Manpack. Customers from Hughes, Toshiba, and foreign military dropped by the booth to learn about what Norsat had to offer. Military show goers commented how they liked that the GLOBETrekker satellite terminals were raised off the ground which kept components dry and that it has the ability to integrate multiple modem types which can support future/evolving network needs. Available in auto-acquire and assisted acquire, Norsat’s satellite terminals are a fan-favourite, especially in military applications. The photo on the right shows Norsat Business Development Manager, Aaron Titus, demonstrating LinkControl, an intuitive, flexible, and powerful software unique to Norsat’s satellite terminals to potential clients.
A Shoutout to our Partners at Satellite 2017
Norsat’s microwave products were seen throughout the show and not only at Norsat’s booth. Below are some images of our microwave products in action. Thanks to Viking Satcom, OrbitCS, TVCComm, and General Dynamics SATCOM for featuring Norsat ‘s microwave products with their satellite terminals!
The Future of Satellites: Industry Discussions
More than 14,000 satellite communication professionals attended the conference and exhibition making it one of the largest shows in the satellite industry. It was great to see that the conference was filled with insightful discussions and that the trade show floor was packed with ground-breaking technology. There were plenty of talks around recent developments with Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) services and the future of collaboration and differentiating services. 11 new Ku- and Ka-band Non-Geosynchronous Orbit (NGSO) systems have been filed at the FCC so it will be interesting to see what direction satellite companies will make with these recent developments.
But All Good Things Must Come to an End
Overall, the Satellite 2017 show was an absolute success! The Norsat sales team connected with some familiar faces and some new faces. Our sales team enjoyed educating show goers about what Norsat had to offer in the communications industry. It was a fun and exciting show and we hope to see you again at next year’s Satellite show!
With over 1870 exhibitors and 103,000+ attendees, the 2016 National Association of Broadcast (NAB) show, the world’s largest electronic media event covering the creation, management and delivery of content across all platforms, did not disappoint. The show was filled with energy and excitement with all of the new technologies sweeping the broadcast industry including those technologies for the delivery of broadcast content.
The biggest talk of NAB 2016 was the future of virtual reality filmmaking. The first major announcement came as YouTube introduced live streaming in 360-degrees. Drones and their future in filmmaking was also a big buzz at the show.
New to the NAB show this year, the Satellite Industry Forum held a one-day conference that focused on the role that the satellite industry plays in broadcasting and the delivery of high quality video content from virtually anywhere to anywhere on the planet whether it is on land, sea or in the air.
Coming off the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) official start of the broadcast spectrum auction, where they will be repacking many hundreds – if not more than a thousand – broadcasters to new frequencies in the television band, we are still unclear as to how this will truly affect satellite newsgathering.
One such panel discussion examined the role that the satellite industry plays in the development and broadcast of Ultra-HD services. Large players such as SES, Eutelsat, Intelsat and AT&T Entertainment Group reviewed the challenges facing the satellite industry in the new age of high definition content delivery.
At NAB, Norsat highlighted its comprehensive and growing line of BUCs and LNBs for the SNG market. With the recent launch of our ATOM 25W KA BUC, and the 250W KU ATOM BUC, Norsat saw huge interest in these products, as well as our 100W ATOM BUC. Ka-band continues to gain momentum with increased interest in our specialty products including the ATOM 25W and 50W, due to best SWaP (Size, Weight, Power) in the industry. SNG customers were very pleased with the SwaP of the new 250W ATOM BUC (equivalent to a 400W TWTA). Our low cost PLLs were also well received as customers move away from traditional DRO to the Norsat 5000 and 5200 series. C-band continues to stay strong with lots of interest, especially from SNG customers and Latin America customers.
Norsat was able to connect with multiple partners, customers and prospects throughout the four day event and feels that NAB continues to be a key show and market area for the company.
Norsat participated in the 34th annual Milcom 2015 show last week in Tampa, Florida. Milcom is the premier international conference for military communications. “Leveraging Technology – The Joint Imperative” was the theme for this year’s event and there was no shortage of interesting and educational keynotes, panels and technical sessions that explored and defined the benefits that joint-level collaboration brings to current and future communication challenges and addressed the critical role communications plays in military readiness and operations.
The Tampa location is ideal for this discussion, with close proximity to the MacDill Air Force Base military community, U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM), U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and the 6th Air Mobility Wing. MILCOM offers industry the opportunity to discuss communications technologies and services with decision makers from all branches of the armed forces, the Department of Defense, federal agencies and multinational forces.
Norsat’s satellite sales team was in full force showcasing several of our top satellite communications solutions: GlobeTrekker 2.0, the world’s most intelligent fly-away satellite terminal; Rover, Norsat’s ultra-lightweight fly-away satellite terminal; CFK-100E compact fly-away kit; CFK-4200 Emergency Communications Kit; and the ATOM series of Block Upconverters (BUCs) and Solid State Power Amplifiers (SSPAs). Norsat was excited to talk to customers and saw considerable interest from customers on our new low Ku-band BUCs designed for use with the FSS Appendix 30B satellite links.
During the show, Norsat met up with Ken Murphy at the iDirect social event on Tuesday night. Ken was a long-term Norsat portable terminal customer that has now moved on to work for Comtech as their Director of Government Programs. Ken was working in Belgium when his teams deployed Norsat’s 1.8m and 2.4m SigmaLink terminals and 1m compact Rover terminals for allied forces in the region. It was great to catch up with Ken and we wish him the best of luck in his new role.
We are in Houston, Texas this week for OilComm 2013 . This show marks Norsat’s entry into the oil & gas market with our new M2M product, Sentinel RMC. M2M (machine-to-machine) solutions refer to a wide variety of technologies that enable machines to communicate with each other in real-time.
With Sentinel RMC, data can be easily collected and analysed from any remote location. It is a complete end-to-end solution that consists of a ruggedized remote terminal unit (RTU) for data acquisition and management, communication services, hosting facilities, and an intuitive user interface to interpret data and establish notification patterns. M2M technology is changing the face of almost every sector of the economy, and we are excited to be a part it!
Come and see for yourself, we are at booth 218 and would love to give you a demonstration.
