Lights, cameras, action! The NAB Show is one of the biggest shows in Las Vegas bringing in over 103,000 people from 166 countries to the Las Vegas Convention Center. Its focus on media, entertainment, and technology is a sensation for all five senses and is redesigning the way people experience media. The NAB show breaks traditional broadcasting conventions and embraces new ways to deliver content. With a broad variety of products on display ranging from cameras, softwares, cloud apps, and drones, there was always excitement in the air. It was especially great to see Facebook, Google, and Amazon getting into the mix too. Norsat International was proud to be a part of this innovative event showcasing our newest microwave technology, the 4- and 5-band LNBs.
Brian, Annette, Laura, and Marcos represented Norsat’s sales and marketing team at the NAB show and they were definitely kept on their toes. They were visiting partner booths, engaging with new and existing customers, meeting media partners, and promoting the new ATOM 50W Ka BUC and LNBs that were recently launched last month. It was amazing to see all the support from our partners as they displayed and integrated Norsat’s products within their demos and booths. Thank you to Viking Satcom who displayed our C-band LNBs, DH Satellite who used Norsat LNBs on their antenna display, and to Superior Satellite who featured our LNBs on their 4.5m antenna and multi-channel feed (see photo gallery below). We met with a lot of partners at NAB and we hope to continue growing our relationship with them.
Visitors came from all over the world ranging from the USA, Europe, Asia and Latin America. It was particularly nice to meet in the middle and see broadcasting and media delivery industry professionals from Latin America. Laura, our sales representative for that region, collected many qualified leads and is looking forward to working on some potential new projects in Latin America. As well, with the recent change to the AMC-8 satellite, many radio stations are looking to upgrade their microwave products. It was apparent that there was a demand for C-band, Ku-band, and Ka-band products. Specifically, customers raved about Norsat’s C-band 3000 series LNBs and boasted that they were durable, high quality, and lasted for years. The C-band 3000 series LNBs were very popular at this show and within the broadcast market.
The showstopper of the event occurred on the third day of the show during NASA’s session, “Reaching for the Stars: Connecting to the Future with NASA and Hollywood”, where the first-ever live 4K video stream from space transpired. The live video involved NASA astronaut and International Space Station (ISS) commander Dr. Peggy Whitson and NASA astronaut Jack Fischer who conversed with Amazon Web Services Elemental CEO and Co-founder Sam Blackman. The three discussed the importance of videos in facilitating NASA missions and then the astronauts demonstrated experiments in a zero-gravity environment. It was a first for the world to see a live 4K video from space and provided an eye-opener for how fast technology is developing. We’re excited to see what happens at next year’s show!
There was never a dull moment at NAB. With Cirque du Soleil performers making an appearance in real at the entrance gate, as well as providing a Virtual Reality experience, the NAB show is where you come for the newest and coolest toys. NAB was a great opportunity to get updated with the latest technology in broadcast and to touch base with many of our partners who exhibited at the show. The NAB show was the epitome of high technology in the broadcast market and Norsat was thrilled to be a part of it all!

Norsat’s US Sales team hosted many guests both military and civilian at Norsat’s booth at the 35th annual Milcom show November 1-3 in Baltimore, Maryland. Co-hosted by AFCEA International and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), MILCOM continues to be the premier international conference for military communications and is the one conference where command, control and communication challenges are presented and discussed end to end – from research and development through existing solutions to future needs.
The theme for the 2016 show was “Securing Communications at the Speed of Cyber” and offered visitors the opportunity to understand the breadth of requirements, the pace of change and the state of play in a variety of C4I markets serving DOD, as well as federal agencies and multi-national entities.
One of the keynotes delivered by Lt. Gen. Alan Lynn, USA, director of the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) discussed that cybersecurity is an important part of the future of warfighting. When he talked about where we are going in Cyber Defense, Mobility and Innovation, reducing SWAP (size, weight and power) for the warfighter was a highlighted theme.
Maj. Gen. Earl Matthews, USAF, (Ret.), former director of cyberspace operations and chief information security officer for the Air Force and now vice president for Enterprise Security Solutions, U.S. public sector, Hewlett Packard Enterprise stated, “With technology developing at what seems like warp speed, new systems will have a higher data processing capacity and greater speed and be able to leverage greater bandwidth. These systems are going to have to be prepared to change frequency dependencies … because this is the place they are going to operate in the electromagnetic spectrum. Physical maneuvers exists in cyberspace.”
At the show, Norsat showcased our GlobeTrekker 2.0, the world’s most intelligent fly-away satellite terminal and the ultra-portable, rapidly deployable Ranger terminal, along with our industry leading size, weight and power ATOM series of Block Upconverters (BUCs) and Solid State Power Amplifiers (SSPAs). More than 1,550 freight and passenger railroaders, transit agencies and supply companies came together for the 56th annual communications and signaling exhibition and Norsat’s Sinclair Division was also in attendance.
Railway Systems Suppliers Inc. put on a two-day exhibition that featured 193 exhibitors. The event officially kicked of on June 29th with RSSI 2016 Board of Director and President Michael Choat cutting the ribbon dressed in his conductors’ hat and coat and with an emphatic ‘all aboard.’
Attendees had the opportunity to network and compare notes about future opportunities. They also heard from prominent figures in the industry including a seminar put on by the Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Discussion was focused around how updates and revisions are selected for the MUTCD and how this might affect attendees’ businesses’.
“The RSSI Exhibition offers an opportunity for all RSSI member companies to exhibit their products and services to their rail and transit customers,” Mike Drudy, RSSI Executive Director said.
While the rail industry may seem as though it’s loosing popularity, the future was clearly on display at this exhibition. Many tech companies are diversifying and finding ways to plug into a variety of segments including communication, monitoring, detection, as well as data analysis and security. While the future is still unclear, the C&S Exhibition is a hotbed for innovation.
At the Sinclair booth, we featured some of our key products targeted at the rail and transportation market including the SM700 low-profile universal transport antenna, the SP440 compact radome enclosed antenna, the SD310/210 dual and single dipole antennas and the SY407 yagi directional antenna. For more information on these products visit our online product catalog or contact our sales team.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the RSSI show in 2017!
The Critical Communications World conference has just wrapped in up in RAI Amsterdam and we would like to thank everyone who stopped by the Sinclair Technologies booth! Compared to last year, we felt that the show was much more successful. The organizers reported a higher attendance and this seemed to be reflected in the increased foot traffic.
Throughout the course of the show there were many people who stopped by the Sinclair booth and were quite interested in our antenna and RF conditioning products. Many of these prospects were predominately from Europe, Eastern Europe, Middle East, South Africa and Thailand. Attendees were excited about our latest product offerings with a couple past customers coming to the booth hoping to partner with Sinclair again on the next phase of their project. This shows the long-term nature of the business especially with larger projects.
Some of the guests who visited the booth spoke about the long lead times with other companies. Sinclair is aware of this industry issue and has taken steps to reduce the lead times, so customers get their products faster. Another trend that we discussed at the show was systems that need to cover multiple bands with emergency services on one band and private operators on the other. Conversations were a plenty with discussions on opportunities for antennas and filtering systems from all over the region.
We had a great time visiting with prospects and customers and are looking forward to seeing everyone again next year.
Another CommunicAsia has wrapped up and this year’s show proved to be another success on our tradeshow ticket. At CommunicAsia2016, Asia’s largest integrated ICT event, the latest technologies in 3D Printing, IoT, M2M, Mobile Apps, OTT and more, were featured. An integral part of CommunicAsia is SatComm2016, the arena for satellite companies to present solutions that address the pressing satellite-based issues.
As in previous years, Norsat participated in the USA pavilion. Showcasing our newest ultra-portable, back packable satellite terminal, the Journey Manpack, our small size, weight and power ATOM BUC line, several of our O3b BUCs product portfolio, as well as some of our RF antenna and conditioning products, the booth was a buzz with activity. Norsat also saw interest in our low cost 5000 Low Noise Block Downconverter PLL series which offer high performance for great value.
Some of the trends we noticed included the proliferation of smaller size dish systems, ranging from 60 to 80cm, and discussions around Low power Ku and C-band BUCs. With new satellites launching in Indonesia soon, we are seeing interest from applications such as the banking industry.
Over the course of the show, it was great to meet and catch up with some of our partners in the region, as well as meet some new prospects and resellers during the four day event. Thank you to everyone who stopped by!
