A Quick Overview: What is the Importance of PIP?
Peak Instantaneous Power (PIP) is a power rating for antennas that are to be used in digitally modulated systems. A PIP rating is important when choosing your RF equipment as a digitally modulated transmitter can cause high voltages in multi carrier systems. PIP is much higher in multi carrier systems than it is in single carrier systems. The high voltages that are produced can cause electrical arcing and possible damage inside non PIP rated system components, ultimately leading to major failure. Using non-PIP rated system components can result in damage to your system resulting in:
- Loss of signal and distortion
- Increase the noise figure or bit-error-rate
- Physical damage to RF components or subsystems to the point of destruction.
This problem grows over time and will lead to missed communications if the issue is ignored. The problem is known to occur in P25 Phase II, Tetra LMR, and in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (ODFM) LTE systems. All systems that use LSM modulation need PIP rated components.

Enough margin is applied to Sinclair’s antenna designs in order to compensate the effects of PIP handling which includes elevation, humidity, temperature, and other environmental factors.
